Trigger warning. Over the next few days, I’ll be talking openly about suicide.
Looking at the statistics is confronting. If suicide rates are any measure of how we’re doing as a community when it comes to mental health, we have a long way to go.
Until recently, I would have guessed more people die each day from road accidents than from suicide. The truth is, suicide claims more lives, and yet it’s still not something we talk about enough.
Today is National Suicide Prevention Day. I don’t think I know anyone who hasn’t been touched in some way by suicide. The ripple effect is enormous; it impacts families, friends, and whole communities.
Lifeline Australia reminds us that most suicides are preventable, and advocacy matters. I agree; awareness, conversations, and access to support can save lives.
Over the coming days, I’ll share some of the warning signs and ways to reach out to someone you’re worried about. If that’s you today, remember: you don’t need to have the perfect words. Just start the conversation. Be open, listen without judgement, validate their pain, and let them know help is available.
If you or someone you love is struggling, please reach out. In Australia, Lifeline is available 24/7 on 13 11 14.
Take care of yourself and each other.
Love, Jen
