If the Pain Was Deep, You Will Have to Let It Go Many Times

A calming visual representing the layered process of trauma healing and letting go of deep pain over time.

“If the pain was deep, you will have to let it go many times.” — Yung Pueblo

Not because you’re going backwards, but because you’re healing in layers.

You might come back to the same memory many times. At first, you explore what happened. Then you begin to understand how it shaped you. Later, you connect with the younger part who carried it alone. And eventually, that part begins to release the stuck stress they’ve been holding onto for years.

From the outside, it can look like you’re going backwards because you’re revisiting the same experiences, but each time you return, you come back with more compassion, more understanding and more capacity to stay present with what once felt unbearable.

And then something amazing happens. The story hasn’t changed, but your body has. The tightness in your chest is gone. Your stomach no longer knots when you think about it. The fear, shame or grief that once overwhelmed you has softened.

That’s how you know healing has happened.

Not because you’ve forgotten the past, but because your nervous system no longer has to relive it.
