Integrating Traumatic Experiences

When we experience trauma, our thoughts, emotions, and body can feel fragmented—like they’re speaking different languages. We might notice flashbacks, racing thoughts, numbness, dissociation, or a pounding heart.

These reactions come from different parts of the brain:

Neocortex = thought
Mammalian brain = emotion
Reptilian brain = survival & sensation

To heal, we need all three parts “online” at once—and that happens within our window of tolerance. In this state, we can create new meaning, new emotional connections, and a coherent narrative that brings together body, mind, and emotion.

This integration allows the past and present to meet in a safe space—where healing happens.

But it’s delicate work. Trauma-informed therapy can help you stay inside that window, attune to your process, and regulate together.

Healing trauma takes immense courage.

I honour your courage.
With love,
Jen
