Can I Widen My Window of Tolerance?

The simple answer is yes.

With time and focus, you can widen your Window of Tolerance. Why does this matter?

Because the wider your window, the more resilient you become. Your prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain that helps you reason, reflect, and stay present — stays switched on through more of life’s challenges. Frozen or cut-off emotions can gently be thawed and integrated.

This means that over time, you’ll be able to feel and tolerate a wider range of emotions without tipping into overwhelm, panic, or shut down. Stress becomes easier to manage, and healing becomes possible.

So how do you widen your window? The key is making contact with strong emotions without becoming so overwhelmed that they flood you. The safest way to do this is with a trained professional, like a counsellor or psychotherapist, who can support you in building emotional regulation and resilience.

This is the heart of the healing journey. With support, your window expands, your nervous system learns new patterns, and life begins to feel more manageable.
