What has your relationship been like with your menstrual flow?

Most of us were just taught the biology of our menstrual cycle. What happens inside when hormones shift, an egg is released, and the lining either comes away or remains to produce a baby.

For many of us, the sacredness of our cycle was completely absent. Usually, because it was missing for our mothers, they couldn’t pass to us what they themselves had not received or lost.

Through my life, I have reclaimed the sanctity of my cycle, perhaps as I have become more comfortable with my body and my sense of myself as a woman.

10 Journal Prompts for Reflecting on Your Cycle

  1. What was my first experience of menstruation like? Was it met with shame, celebration, confusion, support?
  2. What messages did I receive about periods growing up? From family, culture, school, media — what shaped my beliefs?
  3. How has my relationship with my cycle changed over time? Was there a shift after childbirth, stress, aging, spiritual growth?
  4. Have I ever felt disconnected from my cycle? Why? Was it due to pain, trauma, hormonal changes, or life circumstances?
  5. When have I felt most in tune with my cycle? What helped me reconnect — tracking, rituals, rest, community?
  6. Have I ever ignored my body’s signals during my bleed? What impact did that have on my physical and emotional health?
  7. What role has my cycle played in my creativity, intuition, or inner life? Do I notice shifts in energy, clarity, or emotional insight?
  8. How do I want to relate to my cycle in this phase of life? Is there an invitation now for gentleness, reverence, or healing?
  9. As I move toward perimenopause or menopause, what am I being asked to release or reclaim? Can I honour this transition as a rite of passage?
  10. What would a loving, respectful relationship with my cycle look like — now and going forward? What small steps could I take to honour it more fully?

Most of us were taught the biology — hormones, ovulation, bleeding. But no one spoke of the sacred.

Our mothers often couldn’t pass down what they never received. And yet, many of us are now reclaiming what was lost. The rhythm. The intuition. The wisdom in our bodies.

These 10 journal prompts are an invitation to reflect on your cycle — not just as a physical process, but as a source of connection, creativity, and healing.

Whether you’re bleeding now, approaching perimenopause, or somewhere in between — your cycle holds insight.
