This resonates deeply with Richard Schwatz’s work, in that Internal Family Systems (IFS) finds there are NO BAD PARTS.
Gabor Mate nailed it here. The part that reaches for the alcohol or the drugs hopes to find something. Often, it is an escape from the pain being felt inside. The pain inside is so great that the only way out is to numb, block, and enter a different state of consciousness.
We are effectively running from the exiled pain with the system (the exiles). The way out is to address the pain.
There are many ways to address the pain and trauma effectively. IFS, Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, and Hakomi, to name a few. If you would like to work with me one-on-one, I have global insurance and am a fully certified clinical psychotherapist and energetic healer.
Much love, Jen
