Boundaries are an act of self-love and are part of healthy self-care. As we grow older, it is natural that we need different boundaries with our family to those that were suitable as a child. This means that even in healthy families, there will be boundary issues as children grow up, as members go through difficult phases etc.
When you are in an unhealthy environment where boundaries are constantly disrespected or non-existent, it can feel like an uphill battle to put in place and maintain even the smallest boundaries. This can create a feeling of hopelessness. You might find yourself wondering, “Have I grown at all? How can this STILL be happening?”
Getting some perspective on the reasons why boundaries with your family are tricky can help to alleviate some of the pressure on yourself. You might go through this list and mark the ones which apply to your situation.
What other reasons can you add to this list? Please let me know in the comments.
