Self-soothing is one of the most important life skills we can learn. So many of us did not learn this vital skill from our parents. They were distracted, absent, or unable to soothe their child because they couldn’t soothe themselves.
As adults, there is still time to learn, and we can practice these tools when we are feeling calm, and our nervous system is not aroused, so in stressful moments they will be easier to use.
This will help keep the eating, shopping, or overworking distractions under control. Finding your inner voice that is loving and supportive and cultivating that voice is one of the best things you can ever do for yourself. This is the essence of re-parenting; learning to give your adult self the love, kindness and attention that you may not have received in childhood
