When things are a family secret, other members of the family often know that something isn’t right. When the secret is revealed, there is often a sense of ‘Ah…now so much in my life makes sense!’ When a member of my close family shared their struggle with mental health with me in my 30s, it was such a relief! I finally understood things that had happened in my childhood, and I understood the person’s behaviour more. It was a huge relief.
I have seen many people have the same experience as me, and Bruce’s book confirms this. It is better that ALL the stories are shared—the stories of pride and shame. It creates happier, healthier families.
Let me know your experiences with this if you feel to in the comments – I read all of the comments and DM’s myself.
Love, Jen
