Ariel’s Birthday

She came four weeks early on her grandmother’s 60th birthday. I remember watching her sleep in the special care nursery. She looked like a porcelain doll with no eyebrows or eyelashes. She was so beautiful and perfect in every way.⁣

That time feels like a dream now as I look at this picture. Today, she is nearly as tall as me. She is dynamic, funny, cuddly, creative, thoughtful and insightful. She’s a force of nature. I love spending time with her…especially in a coffee shop or a bookshop. ⁣

She teaches me that as a mother my job is to shine the light and water the seedling. It is not for me to force her to grow in any particular direction, turn a certain colour or be a certain height. My job is just to water, feed and love and watch her unique self emege, strengthen and lead her forward in her life. To be there when she stumbles.⁣

Right now, being a mother is the most important role I have. I hope I hold it lightly so my children are free to grow. ⁣

I have so much gratitude for their presence in my life.

Forever grateful.⁣
