Walking: Your Body’s Built-In Way to Process Emotions

Walking doesn’t just clear your head — it helps your brain process.

Each step activates both sides of the body, and in turn, both hemispheres of the brain. This gentle rhythm — left, right, left, right — mimics the bilateral stimulation used in EMDR therapy to help integrate emotions and memories.

When we sit still, the brain’s threat centre stays loud. Walking helps quiet it down. It turns tension into rhythm and brings your body back into a state of safety.

Walk after a fight.
Walk when your mind is looping on what-ifs.
Walk when you need to come back to yourself.

If you’re having a hard conversation, try walking while you talk. You’ll both stay more balanced and open. Compassion comes easier when your nervous system feels safe.

Afterwards, pause and notice how much calmer you feel.

I grew up walking. We walked through forests, fields, into town, and along canals. It gave me space to see the butterflies and wild flowers in bloom, to hear the birds.

I got to see the change of season, to smell the damp of the forest floor in autumn and the long grass by the canal. The gentle rhythm, being in nature — it was a balm through my childhood and I’m grateful for it.

Your body already knows how to find balance. It just needs you to start moving.

Love, Jen
