Little self-betrayals add up.

Saying yes when you mean no. Pushing down your real needs. Forgetting to check in with yourself.

We often think self-betrayal is only about the big moments. But it’s in the small choices where the patterns grow.

Little self-betrayals become a habit. It is in the little moments where our natural reaction is to say yes, when really, the right answer for us at that time is no. Self-betrayals happen when we don’t take the time and care required to check in with ourselves gently.

Every time you say yes when you mean no, or dismiss your own needs, you quietly teach yourself that your needs don’t matter.

But here’s the truth: they do. You do. YOUR NEEDS MATTER. YOU ARE IMPORTANT.

The first and most crucial step in breaking the self-betrayal pattern is to know — deeply — that your needs matter.


Start Building Self-Trust

The first step to breaking the cycle is to pause and check in with yourself. Even a simple, “Can I get back to you on that?” can create the space you need to honour your truth.

When I want to say yes, but I think the real answer might be no, I often say, “I’m not sure, can I get back to you on that?”

Checking in with yourself in the moment to see what you need is a habit you can develop. Here are two practical ways to start:

  • Pause before answering. Say, “I’m not sure, can I get back to you?” This gives you the space to tune in to what you actually need.
  • Set an hourly reminder to check in. When it rings, ask yourself: “What do I need right now?”

Getting into the habit of going quiet and listening for your inner response will help you in the more stressful moments — like when someone is waiting for your response.

Over time, this practice builds self-trust. You’ll start to feel more grounded, more connected, and more confident in making choices that align with who you really are.
