You don’t stay in unhealthy relationships because you’re broken.

You stay because a younger part of you is still hoping for a different ending.

The ending where someone finally chooses you. Stays. Sees you. Loves you.

So when someone feels familiar, that younger part whispers, “Maybe this time.”

Not because they enjoy suffering. Because they’re still trying to heal the original wound.

Your nervous system isn’t looking for what’s healthy. It’s looking for what’s familiar.

Until that younger part realises the past is over. When they release the stuck stress they’ve been carrying, they stop searching for someone to rewrite the past.

That’s why healing changes relationships. Not because you become harder. Because you become freer.

You stop looking for someone else to give you the ending you can now give yourself.

One of the most painful patterns I see is people returning to relationships that continue to hurt them and wondering, “Why do I keep doing this?”

It’s easy to believe something is wrong with you. But often, something much deeper is happening.

When we experience relational trauma, younger parts of us don’t stop longing for what they needed. They continue searching for someone who will finally provide the love, safety or consistency they never received. When someone feels familiar, those parts quietly hope, “Maybe this time the story will end differently.”

This is one reason unhealthy relationship patterns can repeat. The nervous system isn’t consciously choosing pain. It’s trying to complete something that was never completed.

Healing isn’t about becoming less loving or less open. It’s about helping those younger parts release the stuck stress they’ve been carrying and realise that the past is over. They no longer need someone else to repair what happened all those years ago.

That’s when your relationships begin to change. Not because you’ve become a different person, but because you’re no longer asking another person to heal a wound they didn’t create.
