One of the clearest signs you’re responding from an old wound is that your reaction doesn’t seem to fit the situation in front of you.

You might know you’re safe, but your body doesn’t. Your heart races, your chest tightens, your thoughts become overwhelmed, and suddenly you’re reacting as though you’re much younger than you are.

Here Are 5 Signs You’re Responding From an Old Wound

1. Your emotional reaction feels much bigger than the situation in front of you.

2. You suddenly feel much younger than you know you are. Powerless. Rejected. Ashamed. Terrified.

3. You keep reacting in the same way — even though you promised yourself you wouldn’t.

4. Your body goes into survival mode. Your heart races. Your chest tightens. You can’t think clearly.

5. You don’t just remember the past — your nervous system relives it.

This isn’t because you’re weak. It’s because younger parts of you still believe the danger is happening now.

Trauma isn’t simply stored as a memory. It’s stored as unresolved stress within the nervous system. When something in the present resembles what happened in the past, those younger parts of us can become activated and respond as though the original danger is happening all over again.

Healing begins when your adult Self turns towards those younger parts with compassion instead of judgment.

The good news is that those parts don’t need to stay trapped there forever. When we meet them with compassion, help them release the stuck stress they’ve been carrying, and show them that the danger has passed, they begin to trust the present instead of living in the past.

You stop reacting from the age the wound was created — and start responding from the age you are today.

Healing isn’t learning to react differently. It’s helping the younger parts of you realise they no longer have to react at all.
