Your youngest wounds don’t have words.
If something inside you feels overwhelmed… panicked… or desperately alone… it may not be your adult self reacting.
Some of our deepest emotional wounds formed before we had language. Before we could explain what we were feeling. Before we could make sense of what was happening.
That’s why some reactions can’t be talked away. Because they aren’t held in words. They’re held in the nervous system.
When these preverbal parts are activated, your body remembers what your mind cannot.
Healing doesn’t always begin by understanding your story. Sometimes it begins by listening to what your body has been trying to tell you all along.
Some of the deepest wounds we carry formed before we had words. That’s why you might find yourself overwhelmed by emotions that don’t seem to make sense, reacting more intensely than you’d like, or feeling something in your body that you simply can’t explain.
It’s because some experiences are stored in the nervous system rather than in conscious memory.
When we learn to gently listen to these younger, preverbal parts, healing becomes less about trying to think our way out of pain and more about creating the safety our nervous system has been longing for.
If you’ve ever wondered why your reactions sometimes feel so much bigger than the situation you’re in, this may be why.
