One of the most important things to understand about trauma is that when we’re triggered, we’re often not responding from our adult self. We’re responding from the age the wound was created.
A disagreement with your partner might suddenly feel like the terror of being five years old and fearing abandonment. A small criticism at work can feel like you’re back in a classroom, overwhelmed with shame. Someone pulling away may awaken the same panic you experienced as a child when love felt uncertain.
This is why our reactions can sometimes feel so much bigger than the situation in front of us.
The goal is to become curious about the younger part of you that has been activated. When we meet that part with compassion and help them release the stuck stress of the past, they begin to realise the danger has passed and are brought into the safety of the present; something begins to change. We stop reacting from old wounds and start responding from our adult Self.
That’s what deep healing is: releasing the stuck stress in the presence of your unconditionally loving adult self.
