Early Relationship
At the beginning of a new relationship, we assess each other to see if we are a good fit. At the beginning of a secure relationship, it is usual to start relatively far apart and move closer together as we learn more about each other and safety increases. I like to think of the beginning of a relationship as a tide lapping up on a beach. We are like a paper boat floating in the shallow water, getting rocked about by the waves and shifting sands. It is hard to find solid ground during this phase because we haven't established enough safety yet. If we jump in too soon, we risk getting hurt or taken for a ride. We are still learning about each other.
